Kalmar
Day 3, August 20
After visiting Stockholm's City Hall, we made our way to Kalmar, stopping for lunch along the Göta Canal.
Kalmar is the site of the Kalmar Union of 1397, brokered by the Danish Queen Margareta, joining Denmark, Norway and Sweden. This agreement ushered in 126 years of relative peace until 1523, when rising internal conflicts resulted in the execution of 80 Swedish noblemen on Gamla Stan in Stockholm by the Danish King Kristian the II and his men. This came to be known as the Stockholm Bloodbath.

An anti-unionist, Gustav Vasa, escaped to Kalmar by boat and organized a peasant revolt, returning to Stockholm, deposed King Kristian and became the first King of Sweden, ending the Kalmar Union. |
